I will never purchase a new GM vehicle, if this is what passes for customer 'service'. I have now replaced 2 radiators and 3 thermostats since obtaining dad's truck. In addition, in order to dodge payments that were required to settle the lawsuit in 2008, this same company declared bankruptcy in 2009 so as not to have to follow up and remedy the owners' problems. You could do the flush yourself, Im not a mechanic but I just follow the directions from people on this website and its been about 4 months without any problems since. But if your under warranty by the dealership, keep dex-cool coolant in there because I heard they could void your warranty if you use any other type of coolant. In 2008, GM offered a settlement for a class-action lawsuit pertaining to the aforementioned damage to affected vehicles. The truck overheats and I have to pull off and let it cool down before I continue to travel. Now once again after another 3 years I am running into the same issue. Another View: In an attempt to save my radiator, hoping that the Dex Sand, as I call it, would get stirred up enough that I could trap it, I installed a coolant filter to try and catch all the gunk. After another year or two the problem was back in full force. It is Dex Cool sludge that has hardened and settled to the bottom of the radiator and eventually partially plugged it. A mechanic then suggested I replace the radiator, which I did. That worked for a while, but the problems worsened. Finally, out of desperation, I took it to a mechanic. As time progressed, the problem continued to worsen, until the vehicle would severely overheat. From time to time, it would overheat, then apparently temporarily correct itself. Step 2 Place a bucket or drain pan under the drain plug on the radiator. Place jack stands under the front of the car for support. Its not my car but someone I know has owned it for a few years now and awhile ago it was recommended to have the cooling system flushed when the car was taken to an oil change place around town here. Step 1 Raise the hood of the Grand Prix and make sure that the engine has cooled completely. In 2001, my father passed away and I inherited this vehicle. Not to start the DexCool debacle, but needless to say I have an issue with a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix (3.1L automatic).
